Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
The student delegation visits from Queen Mary University of London. A total of 30 students led by Lecturer of Economic Geography, Dr Gale Raj-Reichert have arrived at Wisma MTUC at 3.00 pm today.
The MTUC representatives who participated in the meeting were Bro Jey Kumar, MTUC Private Sector Vice-President, Bro Somahsundram, MTUC Education Officer and Bro Zul Thye, MTUC MRC Coordinator.
Sdra Jey Kumar commenced the occasion with a greeting address and thanked the delegation for visiting the MTUC as one of their destination of study tours. Sdra Somahsundram also gave a speech and briefed on the history of the Trade Unions in Malaysia, the MTUC Establishment History and several other explanations related to the Malaysian Trade Union and Malaysian Employment Laws.
Finally, Bro Zul Thye presents information on the functions and responsibilities of the MTUC Migrant Workers Resource Center and matters relating to migrant workers in Malaysia.
This session went very well and gave much input to the students when the question and answer session took place.
