Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 (Bernama) — The implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is in line with the government’s aspiration to increase the country’s income and revenue by 2020, hence giving a huge benefit to the people, including civil servants.
The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) president Azih Muda said when the government managed to increase its income through GST, each of Cuepacs’ demand for the benefit of civil servants would be easier to be considered.
“The implementation of GST can increase the country’s income and the government will be able to consider Cuepacs’ latest demands,” he told reporters after attending the Dialogue on GST and Economic Issues with Cuepacs here Wednesday.
The dialogue with Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan was aimed at explaining about GST to the targeted groups, including the media, student associations, artistes and government-linked companies.
Meanwhile, Ahmad said the explanation on GST would be intensified to provide greater understanding to the targeted groups.
“In this context, we will provide facts on GST, if we provide facts without emotion, it will bring better results,” he said, adding that the ministry would also look for a new formula to give explanation to the people, so that it would not be misunderstood.
The government has announced the implementation of GST at the rate of six per cent from April 2015 to replace the current sales and services tax. — BERNAMA
