Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
BUKIT MERTAJAM, Sept 30 (Bernama) — The manufacturing, services, and retail and wholesale trading sectors have been identified as major contributors to accidents at the workplace this year.
Human Resources Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Abd Muttalib said 20,859 workplace accidents were reported up to June this year and the number was expected to increase.
“Out of the figure, 282 were fatal accidents and such cases could affect the employers’ operations,” he told reporters after opening the Occupational Safety and Health at School Programme, here, today.
Ismail said the ministry had meanwhile opened investigation papers on 1,782 accidents and 1,297 cases of illness at the workplace, besides 782 complaints from workers.
He added that 10,207 notices were issued including on 231 compounded offences and 165 prosecution cases for violating safety regulations at the workplace.
Ismail said employers should always be concerned about their workers’ safety and needed to provide them with various safety and protective equipment.
“Employer-employee cooperation is important to curb accidents at the workplace,” he added.
Ismail also urged the state education departments and schools not to take lightly the issues of safety, health and welfare of teachers and students. — BERNAMA
