KUALA LUMPUR – National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia (NUFAM) urged the Ministry of Human Resources to draw out a clear policy on whistleblowing issues within companies in order to protect the employees.
According to the Secretariat of NUFAM, some companies were seen to be engaged in ‘bullying tactics’ when employees file complaints to the authorities.
“It is time for new policies to be drafted to help protect workers better. We cannot rely on the existing laws as it is not giving employees the right protection they need. Companies can still act against the individuals when a case is being filed to the Labour Department or to the Unions,” the Secretariat of NUFAM said in a statement.
NUFAM said that certain companies have existing whistleblowing policies crafted to protect the interests of the business and not the rights of those who files a complaint.
“We have complaints of employees being hauled up by their Head of Department, asking them to withdraw their complaints filed to the authorities or face termination.
“Although the employees knows they have the right to file complaints to the authorities, many are afraid to reveal their identities.
“The authorities could not act on the complaints when there is no valid identity of the complainant.
“This has been going on for years and we see it is the right time now for the new government to form a new whistleblowing policies and even set up a Whistleblowing Committee to help protect the employees,” NUFAM said.
NUFAM further urged the Ministry of Human Resources help create transparent new laws to ensure that employees are given the right protection and assurance that they will not get bullied or harassed by their employers for complaining and strict laws need to be implemented against companies which react against their employees.
