is expected to exceed five million by 2010 and this will have a major impact
on the employment situation in the country, said Malaysian Institute of Economic

MANILA, Philippines — What has been hailed as a landmark declaration promoting
the welfare of migrant workers in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
has hit a bump on the road.
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 (ES) The two main opposition parties here today
have expressed support for a picket on Aug 8, to get the government to enact
a minimum wage of RM900 and a cost of living allowance (COLA) of RM300.

Seperti biasa, saya dan rakan sekerja akan duduk bersama menikmati minum petang
setelah selesai bekerja shif pagi pada jam 4 petang. Hari ini teman saya asyik
tersenyum gembira setelah menerima surat dari ibu pejabat. Saya cuba mencungkil
apa yang tersirat di sebalik raut wajah kegembiraannya. Akhirnya dia membuka
cerita, "Aku dah diserapkan ke status pekerja tetap lah", ujarnya
sambil menunjukkan surat rasmi yang diterimanya. Teman saya ini sudah bekerja
di syarikat melebihi dua tahun. Beliau telah mula bekerja dengan status pekerja
kontrak selama setahun dan kemudian, kontraknya diperbaharui setiap tahun.

THE Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) is contemplating holding another
round of pickets throughout the country on August 8 to press for the minimum
wage in the private sector to be set at RM900 a month and also Cost of Living
Allowance (COLA) of RM300 for the workers in it.
