Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
9 Dec 2018 – Padang Timur, Petaling Jaya
The Human Rights Day celebration originally scheduled for 8-12-2018 was postponed to 9-12-2018. The event went smoothly with the attendance and involvement of MPs, Government Agencies, Employers’ Representatives and Trade Unions.
MTUC was invited and given the opportunity to participate in the program. The MTUC was represented by Bro Zul Thye, MTUC MRC Coordinator, and assisted by Bro Haiqal, Bro Azri, Bro Michael and Bro Sethu from NUBE and supported by Bro J Solomon, Secretary General of MTUC.
The ceremony was started with the singing of the National anthem of Malaysia and was followed by a welcome speech by SUHAKAM Chairman, YBhg. Tan Sri Razali Bin Ismail who officially inaugurated Human Rights Day 2018.
The MTUC has opened its exhibition booth by displaying and explaining to visitors about its functions, activities and achievements. The functions and activities of MTUC MRC are also highlighted.
We also received several complaints regarding employment issues from some of the attendees. Most local and international visitors have given a very positive comment on the efforts made by the MTUC in championing both the local and migrant workers in Malaysia.
