Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
In a statement issued here, the department said the proposed wage regulation was formulated by the Wage Council for General Workers in Smallholdings in Sarawak and had been submitted to the federal Human Resources Ministry.

Copies of the proposed regulation can be obtained free of charge by applying
to the Labour director and any Labour office in Sarawak, namely Kuching, Serian,
Sri Aman, Sarikei, Sibu, Kapit, Bintulu, Bakun, Miri, Marudi and Limbang.

The applicants must state the number of copies required in Bahasa Malaysia
or English and the name and address to which they are to be sent to.

Any feedback must also be stated in writing, including the grounds for objection,
omission, addition or modification. The feedback must also bear the name and
address of the sender.

The feedback should be sent to the chairman of the Wage Council at the Labour
Department, 13th Floor, Bangunan Sultan Iskandar, Jalan Simpang Tiga, 93592
Kuching, Sarawak.

Smallholding has been defined as a farm of below 40.47 hectares cultivated
with cash crops, vegetables or fruit trees, carry out livestock rearing or aquaculture,
or used as a nursery.
