Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) wants the Government to conduct a thorough investigation on the allegation of detainee abuse that had caused deaths at the Juru immigration detention centre.
Although the Immigration Director-General, Datuk Mustafar Ali has denied allegations of abuse and promised that a detailed statement will be issued, an independent task force need to be set up to investigate this issue.
An independent investigation is very crucial to get the actual details. Transparent investigation is important because it involves foreigners and we do not want any party to take the opportunity to tarnish the country’s name.
The outcome of independent investigation must be made public. If the investigation shows that there are elements of criminal negligence, the respective individual or parties involved should be brought to justice.
