MTUC/ILO TRAINING ON COLLECTIVE BARGAINING commenced this morning with 25 participants from various unions who are hungry for knowledge and experience in this area.
The training is being conducted by ILO Facilitators that is:
Bro Raghwan a former Senior ILO Specialist who is from Fiji; he has more than 40 years of trade union background from within and outside the country as well as the international platform; along with
Bro Youngmo, Social Dialogue Specialist from ILO Bangkok Office. He is from South Korea with more than 25 years trade union background from within and outside his country and the international platform as well.
Both of them are assisted by MTUC facilitators, Bro. K. Somasundram and Sis. A. Karuna.
The launch this morning was graced by welcoming words from:
1. Bro J Solomon, MTUC Secretary General, and
2. Bro Hugo Van Noord, ILO Chief Technical Advisor in Malaysia.
Bro Hugo, in his speech said that this training was very relevant at this point in time, in the context of nation’s labour laws that are not conducive for workers including the limited scope of the collective agreements that is stagnating the growth of trade unions.
He also praised MTUC for organising this training in view of the Pakatan Harapan Government looking into reviewing the labour laws and it is time for unions to play a key role in this matter.
Bro J Solomon, in this welcome address stressed on the need for unions to prioritise rights of workers in the contents of the Collective Agreement instead of confining to monetary provisions only and he clarified that “if we have rights, we can fight for higher salary adjustments compared to focusing only on higher wage adjustments without rights.
MTUC hopes that this training will be the beginning of basic training for unions that were present for their coming collective agreements and at the same time provide inputs for MTUC’s consideration for the labour law amendments.
