Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
Received a courtesy visit from ILO Regional Office for Asia & The Pacific represented by Sis Panudda Boonpala, Deputy Regional Director of ILO and Sis Anni Santhiago from ILO Kuala Lumpur. The MTUC representatives who were jointly present at this meeting were Bro Joseph Solomon, MTUC Secretary-General, Bro K. Soma, MTUC Education Officer and Bro Zul Thye, MRC Coordinator.
Bro J Solomon commenced the occasion in welcoming Sis Panudda Boonpala presence and thanked her for taking the time to discuss some of the issues regarding current and future collaboration between MTUC and ILO.
Sis Panudda Boonpala also expressed the intention of the ILO to further collaborate with the MTUC. The direction and tripartite relationship should be enhanced to achieve the objective of promoting decent work for sustainable development towards under the Malaysia Country Program from 2018 to 2020.
Bro J Solomon went through with the ILO Deputy Director on the Draft DWCP 2018/2020 and raised some concerns and proposed an inclusive consultation and sought for clear and precise support of the Office for MTUC in implementing the goals of SDG and the challenges faced by Malaysian Workers.
The Deputy Director has taken note and welcomed our concerns and look forward for a more inclusive consultation between all constituents hereafter.
