Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
He said that since the Socso Act was enforced in 1971, Socso had collected
contributions totalling RM13 billion.
<p>"Last year, the amount of contribution collected was RM1.5 billion while
benefits given out to the contributors totalled RM830 million," he told
reporters at Menara PERKESO in Jalan Ampang.</p>
<p>He commended Socso’s enforcement effort which had been effective in ensuring
that many employers registered their operations and workers to avoid complications
when making claims should accidents happen.</p>
<p>The number of employers registered with Socso as at November last year rose
to 576,244 from 542,629 in 2004.</p>
<p>Dr Fong said Socso had been instructed to review the benefit for hemodialysis
treatment of an insured worker as the current amount of RM500 annually was not
quite enough.</p>
<p>Presently, 157 hemodialysis centres provide treatment to 2,600 workers who
contribute to Socso. Socso makes the payment direct to the centres. — BERNAMA
