Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?

The Minister of Human Resources YB Tuan M. Kulasegaran gave an audience to MTUC and Solidarity Centre at the Wisma HRDF.
He was accompanied by Puan Betty The UnderSecretary of Policy Division of MOHR, officials from HRDF and SOCSO.
MTUC was represented by Deputy President Bro Jaafar Majid and Secretary General Bro J Solomon and Solidarity Centre Regional Director Mr David Welsh.
Solidarity Centre has been in collaboration with MTUC for some time and of late Mr David Welsh has supported many of the MTUC activities especially on the Labour Law Reforms and for the ratification of C 87.
It was a fruitful meeting where Mr David Welsh got the briefing from the Ministry in the overview of how lab law reforms are progressing. As well on discussion on how migrant worker policy and other policy initiatives could go forward.
The Deputy President Bro Jaafar Majid has raised pertinent issues on the role of MTUC in promoting skill knowledge to workers and how to collaborate with HRDF with workers whose employers are contributing to HRDF.
He also welcomed the initiative of NHRI to set a labour standards for all workers in the country.
MTUC also proposed that HRDF or the government should set up a Labour Institute equivalent to ITC- ILO in Turin, Italy. Malaysia is geographically located as an ideal country for such facility for Asia Pacific.
Minister gave us an overview of his concerns on the well being of the workers in the country and how it should benefit the country and also took note of our views and concerns.
MTUC is grateful for the Minister and the Ministry officials to grant us the opportunity to meet us despite his tight schedule and with a promising outcome.
