Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
<p>Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Bakar said Socso had not
appointed any agent to help contributors file claims for payments.</p>
<p>"Only Socso has the right to arrange for any claims for payment. So contributors
should be wary when coming across such agents," he told reporters after
opening a motivational seminar for children of Socso recipients who would be
facing examinations this year.</p>
<p>He said this particular company had been operating for the past one month from
Menara Alpha Wangsa Maju and had offered to become the middleman in obtaining
Socso payments. It required the contributors to pay RM50 to become members.</p>
<p>"We learned of the company’s activities after receiving complaints from
the public."</p>
<p>He said the company’s managing director was a former senior officer of Socso
who retired in 2002.</p>
<p>On Socso contributions, Abdul Rahman said the organisation collected RM1.2
billion last year and paid out RM850 million to contributors.</p>
<p>The contributions are expected to increase to RM1.3 billion this year due to
an increase in the number of workers.– BERNAMA<
