Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
BAYAN LEPAS: A foreign worker tried to escape detection by hiding behind a shrine near a laundromat during an Immigration Department operation today.
However, his attempt at avoiding detection was unsuccessful after sharp-eyed enforcement officers noticed something amiss at the shrine and quickly detained him.
Penang Immigration Department enforcement chief Basri Othman said the man was among 16 foreign workers who were rounded up in the hour-long raid here which began at 11.30am.
Those detained were aged between 20 and 40 and had violated their work permits by working in other places , he said. They comprised 15 men from Nepal and a Bangladeshi.
“We have monitored their movements for the past two weeks,” he told a press conference.
