Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
They will seek to address issues that threaten their welfare and job security, among others.
MTUC acting president Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid said the rally would also demand for amendments in the laws to standardise the minimum wage at RM1,200, a monthly allowance of RM300 under the cost of living allowance (Cola) for private sector workers and a review of the GST.
“The GST contributes to the retrenchment that we are facing and increasing our cost of living.
“We will also call on the Employees Provident Fund that the withdrawal age be maintained at 55. We cannot accept any proposal to increase the withdrawal age to 60,” he said yesterday.
When asked whether a police permit has been obtained for the rally, he said the district police headquarters had been notified and verbal permission had been granted.
The rally is scheduled to begin at 7.45am and expected to end at 1pm.
