MELAKA: The Melaka Fire and Rescue Department were treated to burgers as appreciation for helping victims in the recent flash floods at Alor Gajah and Jasin.
Lions Club of Tanjung Bidara president, Chew Chert Fong, said he valued the sacrifice made by the Fire and Rescue Department, along with the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), who worked throughout the first and second day of Hari Raya when the state was hit by an unexpectedly heavy rainfall on June 25.
“They had to work in the wee hours evacuating the victims on Hari Raya, and these heroes should be honoured,” said Chew when met at the Kubu Fire station here yesterday.
Chew added that he will also be handing over complimentary tickets to four entertainment parks to state APM offices so that their personnel could bring their families for some fun at The Shore shopping complex here.
“We will take care of all the expenses of those who had to work on Raya so that they can enjoy a well-deserved excursion with their families,” he added.
Hard Rock Cafe Melaka manager Anderson K. Selva is also arranging dinner for the personnel from both agencies.
“We want to show them that we treasure their deeds,” he said.
Meanwhile, the number of flood evacuees in the state dropped to 81 as of 2pm yesterday, compared to 154 on Tuesday.
State APM director Lt-Kol Effendy Ali said six victims in Jasin were allowed to return home at noon, leaving 81 people from 18 families still at the SK Tehel relief centre in Jasin, as well as at Bukit Balai and Kampung Pulau in Alor Gajah.
He said the villages still affected by the floods in Alor Gajah are Kampung Padang Kerbau Bukit Tambun, Kampung Bukit Balai, and Kampung Pulau, and while those in Jasin are Kampung Tanjung Laboh and Kampung Parit Lampong.
