Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
The Congress of Unions for Employees in the Public and Civil Service (Cuepacs) has urged its members not to believe an online news report that government contract employees will have their services terminated in December this year.
Its deputy president II, Mohd Shaman Jaes, said chief secretary to the government Ali Hamsa has already issued a statement that the government did not intend to terminate the contracts of its staff this year.
A news portal had reported yesterday that government contract workers would have their services terminated, beginning December this year.
The portal, citing sources, said the information was obtained from a meeting held yesterday morning.
Mohd Shaman claimed that the false news was deliberately created to stir up anti-government sentiment among the contract staff.
“Every now and then, irresponsible parties are creating issues to spoil the good relations between the civil service and the government.
“It’s important for government employees to filter whatever they read and seek clarification from Cuepacs or the Public Services Department, instead of believing everything that appear online or go viral on social media,” he said in Kuala Lumpur today.
Mohd Shaman also said that Cuepacs and the government would look into the welfare and well-being of all civil servants, including those employed on a contract basis.
“If at all the government intends to terminate their contracts, it would discuss the matter with Cuepacs first. It’s not easy to terminate a contract just like that.
“The chief secretary has already said that it’s false news and a lie spread by irresponsible individuals,” said Mohd Shaman.
