Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
Cuepacs president Omar Osman welcomed its formation to help address complaints raised by the business community and the public.
<P>"But our complaint is that we should have been invited to join the committee.</P><P>"As an integral part of the civil service, we are in a position to provide input on improving the delivery system."</P>
<P>MTUC general-secretary G. Rajasekaran said the
organisation could give its perspective on ways to improve the delivery system.</P><P>While
he was glad that the government was serious about reports on competitiveness and
working to rectify the problem, he wanted to know how the task force would go
about its duties.</P><P>"It is commendable, noble and the right way to go
but will it work?"</P><P>He wanted to know if the committee would meet people
for input before arriving at its conclusions.</P><P>Malaysian Professional Centre’s
Isaac Sunder Rajan shared MTUC’s and Cuepacs’ lament.</P><P>"There
is no representation from the consultancy sector, which forms a critical component
in the delivery system."</P><P>The Confederation of Malay Economic Association
(Gabem) executive director Datuk Mohamed Dahan Abdul Latiff said the task force
would improve the image of the country among the international business communities.</P><P>He
said Pemudah should not just look at the public sector’s delivery system
but that of the private sector, too.</P><P>"The biggest plus point is that
if the committee’s work is done and a lot of red tape is cut, it will help
reduce corruption."</P><P><I>Source: http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/nst/Friday/National/20070209093548/Article/local1_html</I>
