Also present from the Solidarity Center were Mr David Welsh and Mr. Wilibrordus Balawala. A total of 25 trade unions from various sectors comprising female participants were present.
The purpose of the workshop was to help these participants improve their knowledge as a union leader. In addition, discussions on preparing a good CBA were also held. David Welsh in his congratulatory remarks thanked the attendees and hoped that the workshop would be fruitful with suggestions and insights in providing Collective Agreements in their respective sectors to uphold the role of women and the entire workforce in Malaysia.
Bro Zul Thye presented the role and function of the MTUC Service Center which was launched over the last 2 years. Some statistics on cases handled by the MTUC Service Center have been presented. This is important to ensure that all participants are aware of the exploitation of both the local and foreign workers. Sis Nasrifah continued the workshop by presenting the role of women in the union. She has made it clear that women’s role is important in any joint discussion and union governance. This was followed by a presentation from Sis Sarojini on the efforts of MTUC Women in the process and campaign for the Government to ratify the Convention 183 – Maternity Leave.
Several group work activities and group presentations were also held to hear participants’ suggestions on the preparation of a good Collective Agreement. Bro Rudy continued the workshop by highlighting the organizing efforts that all unions need to make. At the end of the session, all participants gave their positive feedback on the workshop. All participants were pleased with what all the facilitators presented and hoped that such a workshop could continue.
