Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
KUANTAN, Nov 5 (Bernama) — Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said the increase in foreign nationals in Cameron Highlands, especially from Bangladesh was because their services are needed in the agricultural sector.
He said the agriculture sector stood to lose if foreign workers, including from Nepal, China, Vietnam and Rohingya refugees were not brought to Cameron Highlands as the shortage of workers could not be filled by locals.
“It is not a problem to round up all the foreign workers in Cameron Highlands but we must be prepared to lose the manpower in the area and the resultant loss of billions of Ringgit in national income,” he told reporters after chairing a meeting at Kompleks Yayasan Pahang here, today.
Adnan was commenting on a front page report in Mingguan Malaysia, claiming Cameron Highlands had been ‘conquered’ by 30,000 Bangladeshis who were purportedly in control of numerous economic activities in the resort areas, including vegetable farms and night markets.
