Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
Abdul Jalil Abdul Hamid made several allegations against the senior officer
in his report lodged at the Jalan Bandar police station.

In his report, Abdul Jalil claimed the council member had awarded a RM2 million
contract to repair and renovate the NUBE training centre in Port Dickson without
calling for tenders and issued a cheque for 10 per cent payment to the contractor
without the approval of the executive council.

He also claimed that the council member had purchased badges at RM4 a piece
when the same could be purchased at RM1.50 a piece.

Abdul Jalil also alleged that the council member had approved a 10-man working
visit to Australia and New Zealand without first submitting a costing for the
trip or getting the approval of the executive council.

Abdul Jalil was expelled from the union on July 28 for allegedly making false
statements about its senior officials.

NUBE, one of the largest trade unions with 34,000 members, has been plagued
by a leadership tussle for the past two years.

Two factions emerged, with each forming its own executive council. In April
2005, the Court of Appeal ordered fresh elections to settle the dispute.

Conducted two months later by the Human Resources Ministry, the election was
won by the group that included Abdul Jalil.
