Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
KUALA LUMPUR: Going by the name “Jengking Malaya” in a chatgroup on the Telegram app, factory supervisor Mohammad Firdaus Abdullah suggested drone attacks on Bukit Aman, Putrajaya and a temple in Bukit Jalil.
The 27-year-old had also pledged his support for the Islamic State (IS) militant group, as well as for the bombing of the Movida nightclub, between March and June last year.
Yesterday, he pleaded guilty in the High Court to seven counts of terrorism-related offences.
He admitted to receiving orders to carry out terrorism-related activites from one Muhammad Fudhail Omar, a known IS member.
He was sentenced to eight years in prison for each count.
He also admitted to three counts of possessing IS-related items, including 89 videos on IS and 34 on Al-Qaeda contained in a hard disk, and a book about acts of terrorism.
He was sentenced to four years jail for each count; these offences were committed at two different addresses in Larkin on Aug 4 last year.
In mitigation, his lawyer Muhammad Imran Mohamad Farok said that his client was a first-time offender who had pleaded guilty.
“He cooperated with police throughout the investigation. A long-term imprisonment will waste his youth,” he said.
However, DPP Mohd Izhanudin Alias said the court should consider the interests of the public .
Judge Azman Abdullah ordered the sentences to run concurrently from the date of arrest, Aug 4 last year.
