Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
"India would sign a MOU with Malaysia soon
in its efforts to streamline the process of migration," Minister of Overseas
Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi said in his speech at the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas
conference, here Sunday.
<P>"We are in the process of finalising the MoU
and working out the details to make it easier for Indian workers to work in Malaysia,"
he added.</P><P>He also said India would sign similar agreements with other labour
hiring countries like the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf states where thousands
of Indian workers have ventured to earn lucrative salaries.</P><P>He said once
the document was signed with the respective countries, it would ensure Indian
workers were treated fairly according to the local laws.</P><P>He was speaking
to participants attending the annual forum where people of Indian origin from
all over the world will be meeting in the Indian capital over the next three days
to discuss socio-political-economic issues.</P><P>Participants from more than
100 countries are attending the fifth forum this year. — BERNAMA</P><P><I>Source:
