Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
On the 8th June 2018, the ISSARA Institute delegates from Thailand had visited to our MRC. The delegates headed by Ms Socheat Nong, Outreach & Empowerment Team Leader of ISSARA together with Hoa Nguyen-Adam from Annam Consulting, Ma Chaw from Myanmar and Aung Su Yi also from Myanmar.
Our MRC represent by Bro Zul Thye and Bro Rudy as the MRC Officer for Selangor/Kuala Lumpur.
Through the ‘Freedom of Choice’ program, ISSARA is pioneering this new approach to empower trafficked persons, giving them the knowledge, options, and resources they need to shape their own futures. The institute was established in 2014 by a team of anti-trafficking experts coming out of the United Nations who created an alliance of private sector, civil society and government partners to address labour issues in global supply chains. It is staffed by leading regional and international experts in labour rights, business consulting and ethical sourcing based in Thailand and Myanmar with additional technical advisors in the US and UK supporting the Institute’s work on an ongoing basis.
ISSARA works with thousands of migrant workers each year, supporting them from the moment they contact them and establish a relationship, through the process of providing assistance as needed. They may request help in changing employers, ensuring legal status, obtaining legal representation, or planning next steps – ISSARA assists workers based on their requests.
Bro Zul Thye presenteded to the delegates the functions of MRC and the services provided to Migrant Workers in Malaysia. They were very happy and satisfied with the work done by our MRC. They also offered their help if there is a need to help on the Migrant Workers.
At the end of the meeting, name cards were exchanged for future correspondence, cooperation and networking. We also distributed our MRC flyers to them on different languages.
