Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
On 5th March 2018 from 10:00am to 3.30pm, our MTUC MRC Coordinator, Bro Zul Thye and MTUC MRC Officer, Bro Rudy Rusly had organized the outreach program at Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS), Bandar Tasik Selatan, Kuala Lumpur.
The outreach program is one of the activities that is in accordance with the Terms Of Reference (TOR) of MTUC-ILO Triangle II Project Migrant Resource Centre (MRC). It is in accordance to the requirement for Outcome and Key activities that is for the support services provided to migrant workers through MRCs.
During the program, we managed to reach out a total of 896 migrant works from Bangladesh, Nepal, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka by distributing flyers of different languages according to the individual countries like Indonesia, Nepal and Myanmar.
In our flyers we have included the information of providing free services on legal assistance for labour cases, organizing migrant workers to join Union, counselling and advice on labour cases and training on migrant workers rights.
We have also included all our MRCs officers contact numbers from Penang, Johor and Selangor / Kuala Lumpur. And they can call any one of us if they need help or any clarifications about their work or stay in Malaysia. For example, if the employer has not paid for the work that they have done, been injured or have not received any compensation, levy matters, if employer has withheld their passport, if they are physically or mentally abused at the workplace and if they want to know more about rights and how to protect themselves.
It was a very successful and fruitful program with the help and cooperation from our MTUC Secretary General, Bro J Solomon and also the TBS management staff.
