Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
A total of 50,000 Malaysians are currently employed in countries like Singapore,
Korea, Japan, Australia, Middle East, Dubai, the United States and the United
Kingdom.
<p>Human Resources Deputy Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Bakar said many Malaysians
were involved in the construction of a 150-storey building in Dubai.</p>
<p>"I was just there in Dubai and was impressed by the number of Malaysians
involved in that project."</p>
<p>Abdul Rahman said the Ministry had received 400 applications from foreign companies
who wanted to employ Malaysian workers.</p>
<p>"Sending our workers abroad is good for the country as it helps strengthen
our economy," he said while winding up the debate on the committee stage
of the Ministry’s Budget allocation for 2007.
