Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
The National Union of Plantation Workers (NUPW) submitted a proposal to the Malaysian Agricultural Producers Associ-ation (Mapa) for an increase in basic salary of the workers but it was rejected despite 15 months of talks, reported Malaysia Nanban.

NUPW secretary general Datuk G. Sankaran said the Human Resource
Ministry was ready to bring the matter to court if Mapa continued to delay the
increase in salaries.

Batu Lintang Estate Workers Union secretary M. Muniandy said the rising cost of living had affected the estate workers.

Kedah NUPW branch president M. Parsuraman said estate managements should have no problem giving the requested 10% increase.
