Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn said the committee, chaired by the Human Resource Ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Thomas George did not fix an amount but suggested that it could be between 50 sen and RM1 from both parties.
“It is still at the proposal stage and will be submitted for Cabinet approval
once finalised. If approved, financial aid can be given to retrenched workers
for about six months, sufficient time for them to find new jobs,” he told
reporters here today.
Asked about the general election, Fong, who is MCA vice president, said his
party was prepared for it.
Denying that support for the Barisan Nasional might drop if fuel prices continue
to rise, he said voters should view the price increases positively because Malaysia
also produces oil, which was being sold at a higher price now.
Earlier, he had presented prizes to the winners of the Sierramas Community
Fun Run 2007 which was held here this morning. The event was flagged off by
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek. — BERNAMA
