Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
TEMERLOH, Aug 8 (Bernama) — All compensation and benefits under the Social Security Organisation (Socso) will be paid to the families of 27 Malaysians on board Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH17 after the relevant documents are received.
Human Resources Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Muttalib said till then, Socso was unable to make a decision on the payment.
“The ministry will ensure that all payments be made out to the families as a symbol of our sympathy for them.
“However, in the meantime, the family members have to be patient,” he told reporters after a cheque presentation ceremony for Socso benefits held in conjunction with Hari Raya here today.
The ceremony was also attended by Socso operations deputy chief executive officer, Datuk Dr Azman Mohamed.
He said monthly payments to be made under Socso’s scheme for victims of disasters depended on their final monthly salary.
If it was more than RM3,000, they were entitled to a payment of up to RM2,750, and if the salary was less than RM3,000, the minimum daily rate was RM30 a day based on the salary scale.
Ismail, who is also Maran member of parliament said Socso provided protection for employers in the event of accident or disaster, including while travelling to or from work. — BERNAMA
