Malaysia is one of Asia's biggest employers of foreign labour. But recently, cases of deaths, abuse and forced labour have come to light. What is going on? Who is protecting these migrant workers?
PETALING JAYA, June 11 (Bernama) — Trade Unions Congress in Government-Linked Companies (GLC), has requested that the government includes a review of pension payment for GLC pensioners in the 2015 Budget agenda.
Its president, Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal said based on its study, it was revealed that some GLC pensioners received monthly pensions of as low as RM150.
“As such, we have prepared a memorandum to request that a review on pension payments be submitted to the prime minister for consideration,” he told a news conference here Wednesday.
The memorandum will be submitted by the Union Network International-Malaysia Labour Council (UNI-MLC) advisor Datuk Omar Osman to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak before this Ramadan.
Mohamed Shafie, who is also UNI-MLC president, said it was also proposed that such payments for GLC pensioners be raised to a minimum of RM750 per month in tandem with the current cost of living.
He also appealed to the government’s goodwill to set up an action committee to study proposals, especially those involving the welfare of these pensioners, who had given their services and sacrifices throughout their service.
UNI-MLC is an umbrella of 70 public and private trade unions, including in GLCs, with membership comprising about 350,000 workers in the various sectors. — BERNAMA
